His parents
separated when he was 2 years old and eventually divorced. He
returned to Hawaii at the age of ten, graduating from high school in 1979 while
living with his grandparents. He transferred to Columbia
University, graduating in 1983 with a B. degree in political science
specializing in international relations. He married Michele Robinson
in 1992 and is the father of two daughters, Malia Ann and Natasha.
